Saginaw Deltas and Men of Kappa Collaborate on MLK Day of Service

To honor the legacy of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., the Saginaw Alumnae Chapter (SAC) in collaboration with the men of Kappa Alpha Psi volunteered at the East Side Soup Kitchen in Saginaw.

Along with the Kappas, sorors worked the floor, passing out food and drink to those in line, served those who were seated upon arrival due to mobility issues, and organized tables of socks, hats, gloves, and clothing donated by both Divine Nine organizations for men and women in need.

“MLK Day isn’t simply a day off, but a day for communities to join together in service to help solve our most pressing problems,” said Saginaw Alumnae Chapter President Lisa Ingram.

Taking place each year on the third Monday in January, MLK Day is the only federal “day of service” holiday.

“In addition to organizing donations and serving food, sorors recited poetry, shared short readings, sang songs, conducted an on-site raffle, and enjoyed fellowship with the staff, community, and one another,” said Soror Rhonda Farrell-Butler, SAC Sisterhood Committee chair.

Twenty two sorors volunteered during the event and over 600 Saginaw community members were served meals during this day of Service. Soror Tammie Gillespie was instrumental in organizing the event.

“Our goal is to continue this collaboration year-round,” Ingram said. “Extending ourselves in service to one another moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.”
